LJ recently moved it's servers to Russia and changed it's Terms of Service. There's an article on Gizmodo here and on another site here. I've had some people ask if we are going to move the Comm to another site. At the moment, no we don't. But I wanted to get opinions on the matter.

I woke up this morning with an overwhelming sense of existential dread* after a seemingly endless dream of being lost at JFK, and also feeling seriously queasy.

I called out of work and went back to bed, and spent the day reading fic. And, oh yeah, got my period for the first time since May. Coincidence? I think not.

Sigh. Time to restart the menopause clock.

*as opposed to the normal level of existential dread that I've been feeling every morning since last November, which is bad, but doesn't usually prevent me from getting out of bed most days

Friday night, L and I went out for dinner for her birthday to a newish place in the neighborhood, and it was so nice. Expensive, but really nice. Burrata stuffed ravioli with roasted grape tomatoes! Steak frites! Moscato! And I had this delicious Café liégeois for dessert.

Yesterday, I started watching s1 of Wynonna Earp, as recommended by some of you, and I'm enjoying it so far, though it is also making me miss the first two seasons of Supernatural, or more accurately, Dean Winchester. This show is sisters fighting demons, and while writing-wise it's about the same level as SPN (though nothing quite sticks in my head like, "We were raised like warriors, Dean!" there have been a couple of moments where something happens, and then the rest of the episode acts like it didn't happen? And I don't mean lingering plot threads for later. I mean, like, the writers forgot what just happened previously?), but it has a lot fewer dead ladies so far spoiler ), and also Waverly, who is THE BEST NO LIE. is this a spoiler? ) The special effects are kind of 90s syndication terrible, but I don't mind that much. I don't even mind the love triangle that much, because Wynonna is just going to do what she wants, instead of being torn between the two choices, both of whom are interesting int heir own ways (though I personally would choose Dolls, despite whatever secrets he's been keeping; at least you know he didn't sleep with your great-great-grandfather).

I guess I'll finish season 1 tonight, and then see if I can track down where season 2 is streaming. (as an aside, I started watching this because Killjoys - also recommended by many of you - is still not on Netflix. Why?)

Now I have a terrible headache, which is not being helped by the Giants being terrible. Sigh. At least hockey starts soon?

eta: I guess I shouldn't complain too much - the Giants have just stormed back with 3 TDs in the 4th to take the lead.

eta 2: I take it back. I was right the first time.

1) So as I mentioned in an earlier post, I re-read my dissertation. By coincidence it was almost exactly 8 years since I'd last looked at it. Although I'd been advised to publish it, I couldn't face the process after its already long journey. It would have meant going through further drastic revisions given that books on internet culture were gaining interest and it would have to be redone for a popular audience. Read more... )

2) This Stephen Colbert tweet and particularly the discussion following it was plenty funny. But it made me think about an issue I hadn't considered before. Do movies made elsewhere ever try to make up countries in North America? Read more... )

3) Boy does the Internet look weird when you're used to browsing without scripts and suddenly ADS! Clashing backgrounds! Video inserts! It's like being deaf and suddenly being blasted with sound. Yuck. (Makes me glad I rarely have the speakers on too...)

4) If only we had more of this kind of guy, who spends his time investigating corporate wrongdoing. "I can’t believe a year and a half after the financial crisis, no one is doing this stuff. I’m not talking about writing these massive, 10,000-word thumbsuckers about some crappy company that did something to a politically vulnerable population. I’m talking about companies that wake up every day and, using the imprimatur of the law, do things that are unconscionable and appalling."

5) Because of a cold snap at the start of September we brought in our hibiscus from the balcony -- the earliest we've had to do so.

I've also got some photos up at common_nature about hummingbirds.

I have six stories sitting in drafts on AO3 to be posted - two of them brand new - and they've been languishing there for weeks because I can't think of titles or summaries for them. Untitled by Destina - Doc and Wyatt get it on is not a particularly enticing gateway to my Tombstone story. What about Untitled by Destina - hey I wrote this Sinclair/Garibaldi story 12 years ago and never posted it, so you'd think I'd have thought of a great summary for it since then, wouldn't you? Sigh.

But I did post some other stuff. It's fascinating, what one finds when one goes combing through one's LJ for untitled stories and comment fic and leftover things I used to worry about people liking. I'm rolling my eyes at myself. It's a blue light special, everything must get posted, even that one Bradley/Colin fic I wrote and am...was... embarrassed by. (It doesn't have a title either, poor thing; I have to think of one by October 22 or it will vanish forever from drafts.)

Anyway, here's the stuff I did manage to make up titles for, hah! -

No Longer Bound To Rome - The Eagle, Marcus/Esca, 2,497 words.

Transparent - Merlin, the knights and Merlin, gen, 2,064 words.

Virtue - Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, 560 words.

Unexpected - Penny Dreadful, Dorian/Ethan, 602 words.

In other news, it's the most wonderful time of the year! No, I'm not talking about Yuletide, tho I guess that's okay too; I'm talking about PUMPKIN FLAVORED EVERYTHING OMG at Trader Joe's! I took my first baby steps in the New! Delightful! Pumpkiny Things! pool of treasures there today, and grabbed up some dark chocolate covered pumpkin spice granola topped with toasted pumpkin seeds, and oh yeah, it's as great as it sounds. Yaaaay pumpkin season!

Yesterday I spent my whole afternoon listening to seven different Native activists, including Louise Erdrich and Edgar Heap of Birds, talk about their activism. It was such a challenging, important experience. And while I am walking away from it with a lot of thoughts, and a lot of books i need to read, and a lot of concrete actions I can take, I took away one thing overall that I need to keep at the forefront of my mind.

When I say / think / complain that this present political situation is unbearable, or words to the effect, I am showing my white privilege. To listen to these seven activists talk about what their families have experienced within the last five generations is staggering. I knew much of it intellectually, but yesterday it hit me with full emotional force. So shut up, white girl. I barely know what it is to hurt.

This morning I met up with boss3 to do a site visit at a conference space in the Empire State Building and gosh, it was a beautiful room. I say site visit like the meeting is not actually taking place there next week (it is); it was more to introduce me to the staff on site since boss3 will be away and I will be staffing the meeting. Just like my meeting planner days! Now I have to put together the BEOs for the caterer etc. It's so fun! If I only ever had to do meetings in NYC, I would go back to meeting planning. It was the travel that killed me. Among other things. (uh, the building on my icon is the Chrysler Building, but you get the idea.)

I hadn't been to the Empire State Building since I was a kid, and [tumblr.com profile] angelgazing was like, "Why even live in NYC if you don't go to the attractions?" and I was like, "I've never even been to the Statue of Liberty." *hands* Generally speaking, the thought of masses of tourists repels more than the attractions attract. Unless someone from out of town wants to go, I generally don't do those kinds of things, though they are always fun when I do.

Anyway. The Good Place had its season 2 premiere Wednesday night, but it started at 10 pm and when I saw that I was like, "oh hell no!" I am not cut out for 10 pm shows anymore. So I set the DVR and watched it last night.

Spoilers from here on out! Please don't read if you haven't watched. It's a show that works best unspoiled the first time around! spoilers for all of s1 and the s2 premiere )

Monday night, [personal profile] innie_darling and I met up to see the new Jake Gyllenhaal/Tatiana Maslany movie about the Boston Marathon bombing, Stronger. The acting was good, I thought. It was not the kind of movie I would have sought out on my own, but I was glad to have seen it.

While we were waiting for the movie to start, we were talking about fannish things as per usual, and about how I sometimes classify a pairing as "I don't not ship it" and in thinking about it more over the past couple of days, I came up with my own personal taxonomy of shipping:

- OTP OF OTPS (i.e., the all-time greats, ironclad, no matter what)
- OTP
- I ship it!
- I don't not ship it
- I could/might be convinced to ship it
- I don't care (i.e., if it shows up in a story that otherwise has things going for it, I'll keep reading, but I don't seek it out)
- meh, I don't ship it / it bores me so I don't read it
- I dislike it but whatever, other people can do what they like, I can scroll past
- NOTP (i.e., it's blocked so I don't have to sully my eyes with it)

Generally, when I talk about a pairing as as "I don't not ship it," I mean that they are people who are most definitely weird about each other, which is one of my personal flags for shipping, but in this particular classification, I don't care if they are having sex with each other or not (or with other people, depending), as long as they are somehow together – partners, brothers, whatever. I think (I hope!) it's implicit that I understand why people would ship them*, but I just...don't take that particular read on the relationship under most circumstances.

*as opposed to pairings where I don't.

And if they are having sex, I personally prefer it not to be framed romantically? Or, rather, in most cases, in terms of canon (rather than AU) settings, I don't find the usual shippy romantic tropes particularly interesting with these sorts of pairings. I mean, sure, 'there's only one bed' or fake dating are always on the table, but I don't feel like even those tropes should follow the regular narrative path. The clearest examples we came up with were Sam/Dean and Mal/Zoe, and I mean, I don't see either of those pairings as people who go on dates or have traditionally madcap rom com hijinks (which isn't to say that that couldn't be done with great results, but I don't think it could be played straight, as it were [I mean, Sam/Dean is incest, so it has its own challenges]). And she threw in Middleman/Wendy (which I do ship more traditionally), and I brought up Obi-Wan/Anakin, which is what I'm having complicated feelings about lately, and so it seems like a useful category to have. idk.

Baen's mass market paperback edition of Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen is coming up next week. Official launch date is next Tuesday, Sept. 26th. However, I don't think this one has a hard don't-sell-before date, so it will probably start trickling into brick-and-mortar bookstores whenever they get around to opening the boxes in the back room.

My box of author's copies arrived. Front looks like this, more or less -- Baen's shiny foil does not scan well.

The back looks like this:

They somehow got the first draft of the cover copy onto this one, and not the final one as it appears on the hardcover jacket flap. That last line was not supposed to be, misleadingly, All About Miles, but rather to put the focus on the book's actual protagonists and plot, and read, "...the impact of galactic technology on the range of the possible changes all the old rules, and Oliver and Cordelia must work together to reconcile the past, the present, and the future."

Ah, well. Most readers (who bother to read the back at all) will figure it out, I expect. Those that don't will be no more confused than usual.

1) I loved this article in the latest issue of TWC. It seems to me it's right on the money of how this particular approach to fanworks has been both overlooked and what it means that there's been no focus on it.

It also has made me want to re-read my own doctoral thesis for the first time since it was finished. Read more... )

2) Speaking of the TWC article, I hadn't seen this news story quoted before but it was an interesting read. I particularly loved the conclusion that these older fans obsessed with the future were pretty unconnected to the actual future of their fandoms.

2) Thanks to Paula for sending me a tip on this documentary about the NY Public Library system. Hopefully it will come to Netflix or someplace I can see it.

3) Thanks to the free Starz week through Comcast, I watched all of the White Princess. I don't have much to say about it as I think it was a watered down version of the White Queen, which seemed to do more with costuming and production values, as well as writing, than this one. Two things are particularly odd Read more... )

4) I was also able to finish off Black Sails. I think it ended at the right time. Read more... )

Honestly, I'm pretty surprised that this series hasn't gotten way more attention or credit.

5) Speaking of Black Sails, a friend has gotten as enthusiastic (perhaps even more so) about it as I have, and I thought of some pirate-style necklaces I could make for her. Here are some, along with a few others I put together recently. Read more... )

Hello, everybody!! Could you, please, help me find:

1. Car accident fic. In this one, Jared and Jensen are fighting and Jensen leaves. It is storming (I think) and he crashes his car like two minutes after he left. Jared hears the crash, goes out and sees its Jensen and tries to save him. I remember Jared getting injuried because of broken glass on the road.

2. Any Non-AU fics told in Jensen POV foccusing on Jared's depression. Like how does he feels about it and how he wants to help/helps Jared. Bonus points if the fic goes deep and aligns to the descriptions of the past few years Jared gave on his chapter in "Family dont end with blood".

3. Break-up and make-up fics. I am looking for ones in which the guys break up and Jensen does serious groveling to get Jared back.

4. Jared helping Jensen get over a bad break and the two of them getting together later on.

5. Possessive! Jealous! Jensen.

6. Fics in which Jensen wants to get it on with Jared but doesnt because he thinks the sex will be super vanilla due to Jared's puppy!dog personality. Later they get together and Jared does surprise him in the kink department.
